INTRODUCTION

The design of modern electronic circuits requires the theory and knowledge of digital logic design.
Digital electronics encompasses all electronic systems that uses digital signals.

Therefore, digital electronic are more robust, high noise immunity, ease of information storage and retrieval, easy to upgrade and many other advantages.

Therefore, digital electronics has become the foundation of today’s computers and electronic systems such as digital cameras and smart phones.

It is now possible to have millions of logic gates in an Integrated Circuit (IC) to realize more complex digital systems.

These ICs are deployed in many different applications such as consumer electronics, medical, automobiles, aerospace, communications and many more.

Digital logic design is an important course to be taken to progress to more advanced courses in the area of Electronics and IC design.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course is also a basic pre-requisite to advanced into areas such as Embedded Systems, Robotics and IoT.

This training will cover in-depth on the concepts and fundamentals of digital electronics through a series of lectures and lab sessions.

 

TOPICS

First, the basics of number system, base conversion from one number system to the other, logic gates, Boolean algebra, and Boolean expression simplification using Karnaugh map (K-map) will be introduced.

Then, the combinatorial circuit will be introduced and how to design using truth table, k-map and logic circuit will be covered.

More advanced designs such as adders, subtractors comparators, decoders, encoders, multiplexers and demultiplexers will be discussed in detailed.

Finally, the sequential circuit design will be covered including latches, flip flops, registers, shift registers, finite state machine, and simple processors.

 

LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon completion of this course, participants will have sufficient knowledge and background to design their own combinatorial and/or sequential circuit.
